Reuters, Washington, February 27 Because dangerous drugs continue to flow into the United States from Mexico and Canada, U.S. President Donald Trump announced Thursday that his proposed 25% tariffs on both countries’ goods will take effect on March 4 and threatened to impose an additional 10% levy on Chinese imports.
Trump announced that he would slap an additional 10% tax on Chinese imports on March 4 in a post that opened a new tab on his Truth Social website. This would be in addition to the 10% tax he imposed on Chinese goods on February 4 in response to the fentanyl drug crisis.
Drugs, including the deadly narcotic fentanyl, are still entering the United States at “very high and unacceptable levels,” according to Trump.
“We cannot allow this scourge to continue to harm the USA, and therefore, until it stops, or is seriously limited, the proposed TARIFFS scheduled to go into effect on MARCH FOURTH will, indeed, go into effect, as scheduled,” Trump stated. “China will likewise be charged an additional 10% Tariff on that date.”
Given what his administration views as inadequate progress in decreasing fentanyl deaths, Trump chose to impose the additional tariffs on China and adhere to the deadline for Canada and Mexico on Tuesday, a White House official told Reuters.
