Donald Trump sailed his 282-foot (85-meter) superyacht, the Trump Princess, to Asia in the hopes of luring Japan’s wealthy when his fortunes took a nosedive in the 1990s and he needed to raise money quickly.
The businessman had previously looked for Japanese financing or customers for his projects.
Trump had a front-row seat in the competitive world of New York real estate because to his Fifth Avenue skyscraper and Tokyo’s 1980s purchasing binge of famous US properties and brands, such as Rockefeller Centre.
His obsession with tariffs, a tax on imports, started at that time, as did his perspective on trade and America’s relationships with its allies.
According to Barbara Res, a former executive vice-president of the Trump Organisation, “He had a tremendous resentment for Japan.”
She claims that he was envious of the perception of Japanese businessmen as geniuses. He believed that America was not receiving enough compensation for helping Japan, an ally, with its military defence.
