The US president praises the Italian prime minister as “fantastic,” saying the likelihood of a trade agreement with the EU is “100 percent.”

As economic uncertainty shakes the market, US President Donald Trump and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni met at the White House and expressed confidence about a potential US-EU tariff agreement.
Declaring her desire to “make the West great again,” Meloni has positioned herself as the only European capable of defusing Trump’s trade war and has emphasised their conservative points of agreement.
Meloni stated she was “sure” they could come to an agreement, while Trump predicted on Thursday that “there will be a trade deal, 100 percent.”
During a working lunch and discussion in the Oval Office, the two leaders had a cordial exchange, with Trump calling the 48-year-old Italian leader “fantastic.”
‘Banking on Meloni’
European officials “are banking on Meloni” to make the bloc’s message to Trump “sound a little bit better,” according to Alan Fisher of Al Jazeera, who was reporting from the White House.
Since the Republican imposed 20 percent tariffs on EU goods, which he has since halted for 90 days, Meloni is the first European leader to visit the country.
